We OFFICIALLY started our reading centers this week. My kiddo's had been doing reading centers but at their tables with a group of 4. Now that we are officially on our way to reading (I have taught all single letter phonograms and majority of my kiddo's are onto cvc words) we also had to be on our way to independent reading centers. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I broke my kiddo's up into groups of 2 or 3 that involved partners of different reading levels (one high, one low and one medium if need be). I then have a SmartBoard screen (sorry I forgot to take a shot of it on our school computers since my home computer does not have Smart-Notebook) that has the kiddo's names/grouping and a picture of the two centers they will be going to (each lasting about 8-12 minutes). That way they know where they are going to go 1st and 2nd. They go to all the stations before we rotate through them again. Right now there are 8 different centers. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I put a lot of my centers in cute bags:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbusmv14XAWMa44jgXC09SPASf99EwrlyU2-pZkeB9VIZvMA-bsYOqzdSEKrtSOmTy7D2yvZO5RHa-1lwbg0-9eca_uHzwCW2pbXmvJY4Nz17EVV4T-5mqJQ9psY-QCIgWiz5S1zP8vlE/s1600/IMG_0596.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbusmv14XAWMa44jgXC09SPASf99EwrlyU2-pZkeB9VIZvMA-bsYOqzdSEKrtSOmTy7D2yvZO5RHa-1lwbg0-9eca_uHzwCW2pbXmvJY4Nz17EVV4T-5mqJQ9psY-QCIgWiz5S1zP8vlE/s1600/IMG_0596.JPG" height="320" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
That way my kiddo's just grab their bag and find a spot in the classroom to do the activity. It makes for easy clean up and the ability for me to switch out centers easily. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(I found all the bags in the dollar section of Target last spring.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are the centers my kiddo's are working on currently:</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
At this center the kiddos turn the dinosaurs onto their white sides. Then they take turns flipping 2 dinosaurs over and reading the sight words that are on them. If they match they keep them and if not they turn them back over for the other player.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see my kiddos are really focusing on the skills of phonogram sounds, sight words, cvc words, and reading familiar stories. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

My kiddos and I have been decomposing numbers 1-10 for a while now as well as finding two amounts that put together make 10. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>(K.OA.3-decompose numbers less tan or equal to 10 into pairs in more than one way AND K.OA.4-for any number from 1 to 9, find the number that makes 10 when added to the given number) </i> </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We have not been using equations with with + and = signs but we have been using the formula </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
____ red and ____ yellow make 10 (or whatever the said amount is). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My kiddo's had been working on this standard for about a week so I decided to find a way to make it a little more creative. Plus we needed to revamp our hallway board. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is what we made:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Gumball Math!</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
**this activity did take a little over 30 minutes... plan accordingly!**</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First my kiddos found five different ways to make 10. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then they chose the one way they wanted to show in the gumball machine.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once decided we put that to the side and made our gumball machine.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here the site I got it from:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://mrstsfirstgradeclass-jill.blogspot.ca/2012/02/wayne-thiebaud-style-gumball-math.html">http://mrstsfirstgradeclass-jill.blogspot.ca/2012/02/wayne-thiebaud-style-gumball-math.html</a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
scroll down and click on the "gumball machine pattern"</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Mrs. T used this as a way to show equations of 10 but since we were not ready for that yet I modified.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I printed one master copy of the pattern and then traced the top and bottom onto red construction paper before copying enough to make for the whole class. I also traced the square onto brown paper and the main circle as well as the gumballs onto white construction paper. This way my kiddo's would only have to color their gumballs and not the rest <b>*time saved I promise</b>!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They cut the pieces out and glued the gumball machine together before doing the gumball part. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(I modeled how to put the pieces together correctly before they got started.)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Once they had the gumball machine ready we went back to our chosen way to make 10 and colored the amount of each gumballs accordingly.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
They glued their gumballs onto their machine as well as their number sentence.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is their adorable work!</div>

I LOVE stamina reading!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My first year teaching I went to an all day class through our district and one of the topics they discussed was stamina reading. What it was, why it is important for kiddos to do, how it works differently in grade levels and classrooms. One new teacher raised her hand and told of her struggle with implementing it in her classroom. She said she taught kinder and her kiddos could not even make it for 1 minute!! I do not know why that has stuck with me, even to this day, but from that moment on I knew I would not only be immediately implementing it into my classroom but that my kiddos would succeed in doing it for WAY more than 1 minute!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Here is how I use stamina reading in my classroom:</b></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I use stamina reading to not only give my kiddos a chance to re-read familiar books but to also gain stamina (get it, stamina reading!!) in reading independently for a good chunk of time. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is how I build up my kiddos stamina. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I made an anchor chart my 2nd year of teaching and have been successfully using it since.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidv4EYJGxwqk5Gwwz_24miEbDAhi7lh0My_fucBbiepnvfOAud-2ZCTiSLU3vfsDZbv_BFNnZXulvhcV4GivZBrrNI13tRK4f2VIe_I0WWd18Qf4KuEP8y4sNLRY7eHN6r6TgRsLS2AEU/s1600/IMG_0473.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidv4EYJGxwqk5Gwwz_24miEbDAhi7lh0My_fucBbiepnvfOAud-2ZCTiSLU3vfsDZbv_BFNnZXulvhcV4GivZBrrNI13tRK4f2VIe_I0WWd18Qf4KuEP8y4sNLRY7eHN6r6TgRsLS2AEU/s320/IMG_0473.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Sorry its a little hard to read and there are no cute pictures but hey it works.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It says:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>Stamina Reading:</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>You must:</b> read the whole time & not move places & not be distracting & be quiet</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<b>You can</b>: whisper read & read the pictures</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The numbers 1-20 are a count up to their final goal of actively participating in stamina reading for 20 minutes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
20 MINUTES you say!!! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is true!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Kindergarten kiddos can read for 20 minutes independently!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Every class I have taught has made this goal!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When I first start stamina reading I go over expectations very thoroughly! I model what I mean by reading pictures (especially since I did not have a single reader at the beginning of this school year) and how if I get through all of my books I can go back and read them again.. I discuss with them their goal of being able to read 20 minutes independently by the end of the school year. We also discuss how when we reach certain minutes that are circled in blue we get rewards. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For minutes 1-3 my kiddos have to stay in their seats and read books from their book baskets that are on their tables. (They each pick 3 books prior to the time starting so there is no fighting over books during stamina reading.) When <u>everyone</u> (I make a big deal how we are a team and everyone has to be successful for that certain amount of time during stamina reading before we can move on to more time) has successfully done their part of being an independent reader during our allotted time I color in that number with a red marker and we move on to the next minute goal. When the kiddos have successfully read for 3 minutes they get to move out of their seats and sit anywhere in our classroom (hitting our first goal that is circled). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
When they move around the room we go over a couple more expectations. Those expectations being they have to be arms length away from everyone else, only one person under each table, and they cannot be moving around once they have found their spot. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPTmqhoR2uLGq_UDEmItjxvnjfS1CaAXnoUuq7jSL-0cbTT4Xm-UJdb6EaXT8D75J6b5oDRNfx9vqlD3sife05-6-93n8prUgn7Ec4TJ2bYhWuRWID8uS5LMJon5hLIdJAOANWvo9sBog/s1600/IMG_0471.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="123" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPTmqhoR2uLGq_UDEmItjxvnjfS1CaAXnoUuq7jSL-0cbTT4Xm-UJdb6EaXT8D75J6b5oDRNfx9vqlD3sife05-6-93n8prUgn7Ec4TJ2bYhWuRWID8uS5LMJon5hLIdJAOANWvo9sBog/s200/IMG_0471.JPG" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmgnLQulDQUXXfVZ4LtMFJgIjI79We5G_Cy9RrN1J9Y08k_7_zK6VIj9dbf1nRm8m-A2BO_Jr6of_Fq3MM9LiiGlx1rmDns6JpH0RwgxRrkATn1OPgwG26_bQ8FaEkAyPt3h-JCU3Ljaw/s1600/IMG_0472.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmgnLQulDQUXXfVZ4LtMFJgIjI79We5G_Cy9RrN1J9Y08k_7_zK6VIj9dbf1nRm8m-A2BO_Jr6of_Fq3MM9LiiGlx1rmDns6JpH0RwgxRrkATn1OPgwG26_bQ8FaEkAyPt3h-JCU3Ljaw/s200/IMG_0472.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kiddos LOVE being able to move and read around the classroom. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I give each of them a large ziploc bag of about 6-7 books. We use Hartcourt Reading material at our school so I put their pre-decodable and decodable books in their ziploc bags plus some other small books I inherited when I moved classrooms. We currently read one pre-decodable Hartcourt book per week that we practice over and over. By the time they get their ziploc bag of books there should be at least 1 book that they can read the words independently. (Once I start doing guided reading with my kiddos I will make them personalized bags so they can practice all the books they have been reading at school during class and guided reading.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My kiddos just got to 7 minutes so they have earned their whisper phones.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSBCEQBMDYgddhawBHS7Npdo7AxElcPjLvyv1eqtQcE1J6vkdEfQzgxkmtn11Efai8gslgzBoJRRlTX5Sd8c6WK-_t9roZckNLPmYYLP19PISCrvGZrsaLkP9ws5tb_QhyB138dloOIAk/s1600/IMG_0474.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSBCEQBMDYgddhawBHS7Npdo7AxElcPjLvyv1eqtQcE1J6vkdEfQzgxkmtn11Efai8gslgzBoJRRlTX5Sd8c6WK-_t9roZckNLPmYYLP19PISCrvGZrsaLkP9ws5tb_QhyB138dloOIAk/s200/IMG_0474.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We once again discuss expectations of using a whisper phone and not "playing" with our whisper phone!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Look at her using her whisper phone and her reading finger!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My kiddos are currently working on getting to 10 minutes so we can have a day where we go outside to do stamina reading!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I haven't yet decided what they are going to be earning at 13 minutes (I try to change it up every year). At 16 minutes they will be earning popcorn to eat during stamina reading and at 20 minutes a pizza party!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I always tell them about their final goal when starting stamina reading in our classroom that way they can be excited to not only read that long but get such an awesome prize!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u>What I do while they are reading:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I monitor till about 5 minutes. After 5 minutes I start pulling a small skill group or individual kids who need a couple minutes of one on one attention in a certain area. I also monitor students individual reading levels by sitting next to them and having them read me a book. They LOVE when I do this!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u>Things to remember:</u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also discuss with my kiddos how I am not available for them during this time. They cannot get up and try to talk to me at all. I also remind them that it is not time to go to the bathroom/get a drink (of course you have those emergencies but for the most part the rule is followed very well in my classroom). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Stamina reading not only allows your kiddos to get more practice reading previously taught text but it also teaches them to love reading and enjoy have time to get into books. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

So about 2 weeks ago I decided I NEEDED to make a story map anchor chart. Look at what I was working with...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCv-hkJULRVdV6JqC5znnk5Xim4aJqcFSeDOyUrva5W-ieJPKWynp9Wm1rd5iZFw76zwEky3tpoHXpAUb_8Vh-fb7uh0tsXWon3UKgY-UA4QMLRvdpWUkRhsTonqxSW1-WzG7sCjsmY3I/s1600/IMG_0420.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCv-hkJULRVdV6JqC5znnk5Xim4aJqcFSeDOyUrva5W-ieJPKWynp9Wm1rd5iZFw76zwEky3tpoHXpAUb_8Vh-fb7uh0tsXWon3UKgY-UA4QMLRvdpWUkRhsTonqxSW1-WzG7sCjsmY3I/s200/IMG_0420.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Ewww!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(<u>Knuffle Bunny</u> is an adorable book and my kiddos LOVED when the baby "talks"! They thought it was hilarious and definitely a story they could relate to (lost toys)).</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
So I made a REAL anchor chart...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNTVspItoKM8Ul3gmbRxTby_zPIbV6zqW6NyAPle2HvWyo7yObc6Jy00CcJTRs1WgUAFufiqfaYjICMfeBBMucEOytiG1lLHFtMxgm0QcHyMTmB9QCdkNQYDRmCSqxBppcY0qz39Fndn4/s1600/IMG_0421.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNTVspItoKM8Ul3gmbRxTby_zPIbV6zqW6NyAPle2HvWyo7yObc6Jy00CcJTRs1WgUAFufiqfaYjICMfeBBMucEOytiG1lLHFtMxgm0QcHyMTmB9QCdkNQYDRmCSqxBppcY0qz39Fndn4/s320/IMG_0421.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see it is much improved. My kiddos love to verbally fill it out and know the objective for reading a narrative text. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Now that I have an appropriate and useful anchor chart I wanted to get my kiddos even more involved. They are not ready to independently write but they can draw!! I first started out with just the title and the characters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhecg0jC1JsYqzw0Jt1bUqWKQD6lzJ-PoY-q6j63A6fIAGgWtHN6ORjGV0X3odIpzIgke4RVxi2ZDN15mHxg924hHRGuNhhLPDIOmFB1lWCBpZgmxGg-_6OxtAQZzkqVuM-s6u7lg0Y338/s1600/IMG_0447.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhecg0jC1JsYqzw0Jt1bUqWKQD6lzJ-PoY-q6j63A6fIAGgWtHN6ORjGV0X3odIpzIgke4RVxi2ZDN15mHxg924hHRGuNhhLPDIOmFB1lWCBpZgmxGg-_6OxtAQZzkqVuM-s6u7lg0Y338/s320/IMG_0447.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We read <u>The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog!</u>. It is a hilarious story and only has two characters and dialog, nothing else to distract the kiddos. After we filled out the Story Map chart we passed out our own papers and got to work drawing the characters.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg90phNpepKBx4bygqyydA7cSMVpQSHxMa9u12UhEcV7tw2_lrY2UiFkW9t92lnDVPKtcNkafb8V7QRgo9MV_XdmEXfdlDpSiijBarszcB4nQHVWigPFoTgvXyyDkWHbKXHBYiM-CQn0Lc/s1600/IMG_0445.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg90phNpepKBx4bygqyydA7cSMVpQSHxMa9u12UhEcV7tw2_lrY2UiFkW9t92lnDVPKtcNkafb8V7QRgo9MV_XdmEXfdlDpSiijBarszcB4nQHVWigPFoTgvXyyDkWHbKXHBYiM-CQn0Lc/s200/IMG_0445.JPG" width="150" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2i6b0cAwfHjghghgvynrMPz16hEGj4HpIOEmw8ydHCeZpfhyphenhyphenuVCUFAsGK1T79gkxSy_J66sIhG5UdDwgywRRZEPBwbI6F5FBh2-WvAT0lDWoWQeklMlPLTtlpWKmLOinbQ6UK0xVBLzk/s1600/IMG_0446.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2i6b0cAwfHjghghgvynrMPz16hEGj4HpIOEmw8ydHCeZpfhyphenhyphenuVCUFAsGK1T79gkxSy_J66sIhG5UdDwgywRRZEPBwbI6F5FBh2-WvAT0lDWoWQeklMlPLTtlpWKmLOinbQ6UK0xVBLzk/s200/IMG_0446.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kiddos did a really great job drawing the characters and we even talked about labeling them with their names!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The next day we moved onto focusing on setting.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCIHYtUH0XOr-xRYxtQC6GsWVVPOzY99ew7kC0FKqS-CX4l1DtQD5M3pK4DqulX404t-QRsSRNtaz3CzkdiOhRw6jMFyurg9UxyBXej-BK1j9x13ycIN6dHuP3aGZzK41B3Pl9-Z7U9Ac/s1600/IMG_0441.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCIHYtUH0XOr-xRYxtQC6GsWVVPOzY99ew7kC0FKqS-CX4l1DtQD5M3pK4DqulX404t-QRsSRNtaz3CzkdiOhRw6jMFyurg9UxyBXej-BK1j9x13ycIN6dHuP3aGZzK41B3Pl9-Z7U9Ac/s200/IMG_0441.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We read <u>The Napping House</u> (where everyone is sleeping until something wakes them up). This is a great book to focus on setting because it stays the same till the very last page. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicUpOoBsATViOrZrwBN3wHfKh2slVXOpuGSoRpAdUhfw5G-ssU7Ggw1qOWvhLlhN8T55fa6ofIiYcTvZ582jzsCTRr3DcPcwO-rvq1FsZRI3GspnaSxuxqlxBVQVIy6NRXCU_oBB5PJJI/s1600/IMG_0444.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEicUpOoBsATViOrZrwBN3wHfKh2slVXOpuGSoRpAdUhfw5G-ssU7Ggw1qOWvhLlhN8T55fa6ofIiYcTvZ582jzsCTRr3DcPcwO-rvq1FsZRI3GspnaSxuxqlxBVQVIy6NRXCU_oBB5PJJI/s320/IMG_0444.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The kiddos told me what the setting was and what I should draw to show it. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is how some of the kiddos turned out:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Since my kiddos did such a great job on both characters and setting when we focused on them individually, I decided it was time to combined them and do both. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjJf5sQScfz4EDbsw28qNZsmhvs-phnD3mEkYUmXXwiNaQCO2cXZE3jZrhc3u6wvdbybB8aomf2t4m0SnNu0d1U3cnKpc4NoGMfMpZkph3yH5b3rTq4IcUExiqe_V330SlohBCQIusYN4/s1600/IMG_0461.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjjJf5sQScfz4EDbsw28qNZsmhvs-phnD3mEkYUmXXwiNaQCO2cXZE3jZrhc3u6wvdbybB8aomf2t4m0SnNu0d1U3cnKpc4NoGMfMpZkph3yH5b3rTq4IcUExiqe_V330SlohBCQIusYN4/s320/IMG_0461.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We read the story <u>Caramba</u> (about a cat who should fly like the other cats but cannot). We filled out the Story Map anchor chart and then we moved on to our own.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjol3Sopq54HuUFyiL492KtDimj-IEpSimmVwgh-RIMRZpij7bnj77Hi4iyQHf5tDfRyyBBzPc2Aii-2u8uhRW3qBV1MI39B4xbqypoX9Fu9zKdZ3Rht6BLKhvPaTtfr-kK6dV1N0RStuE/s1600/IMG_0460.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjol3Sopq54HuUFyiL492KtDimj-IEpSimmVwgh-RIMRZpij7bnj77Hi4iyQHf5tDfRyyBBzPc2Aii-2u8uhRW3qBV1MI39B4xbqypoX9Fu9zKdZ3Rht6BLKhvPaTtfr-kK6dV1N0RStuE/s320/IMG_0460.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We drew the characters together on the SmartBoard. Then we talked about the setting in the story again (outside in grass, the shore, or the ocean). The kiddos could choose what they wanted to draw to represent the setting for the story. Here is how one turned out:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGoEx5ocg1gOS01TfYNWIcKNKiz0S95H_WLBEcETrFP-TdrmR9nzhfaRLoFpafnCpKnY-vCqwrPmfpqo65oMEUdKXJZtalHm_tzNZlq2tqGbOM5NVWNWQ52Kz2TTO_Q38wY6r16-9RDQU/s1600/IMG_0459.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGoEx5ocg1gOS01TfYNWIcKNKiz0S95H_WLBEcETrFP-TdrmR9nzhfaRLoFpafnCpKnY-vCqwrPmfpqo65oMEUdKXJZtalHm_tzNZlq2tqGbOM5NVWNWQ52Kz2TTO_Q38wY6r16-9RDQU/s320/IMG_0459.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(I thought I took more pictures of some of the other kiddo's work but I cannot find them. I will take more this week as we continue to work on setting and characters of each story we read.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

I got my act together and here is a couple ideas of what I use almost daily on my SmartBoard notebook. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><u>Phonograms</u></b>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The first thing my kiddos and I do in the morning (after bellwork) is phonograms (Sequential Processing). At my school we have been discussing and working on making objectives kids friendly so they know what they are going to do and why. My co-worker/friend Kristen and I made one on our SmartBoard for our phonograms. (Check out her blog: <a href="http://idowedoyoudo.blogspot.com/">http://idowedoyoudo.blogspot.com/</a>). </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
We start each morning with the question, "Why do we learn phonograms?" with the choral response "So we can read and write!". Then I go over everything we are going to do and we begin. As we complete each part we check them off.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYxhbqe02ncs_3VYsIm7_c1k60tRqCNA9n76ho79Ycuy8eqHx8UAet2EkLpPGrrPDqjFJvNzPaVbd7j0s_KNGdMDXXKHLDU_YShQW1QYY8nMRqRxOHoDidrPPWAbSUT_aakDWYuxsFkQ8/s1600/Phonograms+2.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="310" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiYxhbqe02ncs_3VYsIm7_c1k60tRqCNA9n76ho79Ycuy8eqHx8UAet2EkLpPGrrPDqjFJvNzPaVbd7j0s_KNGdMDXXKHLDU_YShQW1QYY8nMRqRxOHoDidrPPWAbSUT_aakDWYuxsFkQ8/s400/Phonograms+2.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My kiddos LOVE it! They know what to expect and can make the connection of why they are learning phonograms. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the screen we use when learning how to write a new phonograms.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I write on the top 2 lines, explicitly describing how I am writing the capital and lower case of each phonograms while the kiddos practice in the air with their finger. Then I pick kiddos to come up and practice capital/lower case of the phonogram while the rest of us write it in the air with our "magic finger"!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Having the black, red, and blue lines is very helpful so when I am describing how to write it or asking a kiddo to fix their work I can use the colors as a helpful visual. (Ex: Start at the top black line, go diagonally down to the bottom blue line, diagonally back up to the top black line... etc). They LOVE getting to come up and practice on the SmartBoard. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After we get done with Sequential Processing I read an Expository Text on the SmartBoard based off the phonogram of the day.</div>

The kiddos and I discuss what expository text is, what the topic for the days expository text is (pointing out that it is a word that begins with the same phonogram as the one we learned for the day), what we already know about the topic, answer questions while we read it, and what we learned from it when we are finished reading it. It's an easy way to introduce expository text at the beginning of the school year without overwhelming them. Once we get through all of the single phonograms (26) we go back and re-learn each one putting lots more emphasis on words that begin with that phonogram and independently writing it perfectly. We also revisit each one of the expository texts but this time at the end they have to write 1 sentence using the topic and a fact they learned. Last year my kiddos liked reading the expository text better the second time around because they were familiar with it and excited to pick and write their favorite fact from each text. </div>

<u><b>Sight Words</b></u></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My kiddos love to play games on the SmartBoard. One game I found last year was a "button" sight word game. I found it on SmartBoard Exchange (<a href="http://exchange.smarttech.com/#tab=0">http://exchange.smarttech.com/#tab=0</a>). It is a totally <b><u>FREE!!!!</u></b> site that lets teachers exchange what they have made of the SmartBoard. You can pick by grade level and/or topic. If you have never gone to this site GO!!!! </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Anyways, I changed this one to the words my kiddos are currently working on. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I start the game by pressing a button. Everyone thinks in their head what the word is. Then I pick a student to say the word. If they get the word correct everyone says the word together and that kiddo gets to press the orange button that takes you back to the button page and then press a different button (if they get it wrong everyone says the word together, they repeat it after, and then get to choose the next word). </div>

As I come across more SmartBoard resources I am using and loving I will blog about them too!!</div>

Every teacher friend I have has a SmartBoard and uses it on a daily basis. (If you do not have a SmartBoard I am so sorry!! At least 80% of all my lessons have an element where we use the SmartBoard! I really do not think I would be as an effective teacher without this amazing tool.) Since the SmartBoard is such an important part of my teaching life I wanted to show you show you some of my favorite sites I use and some of the SmartBoard Notebooks I have set up to use with my kiddos. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Class DoJo website allows you to keep track of all the positive and negative behavior that is occurring in your classroom. You can view it where the kiddos can see both their negative and positive behavior points or the view that shows the scores combined (every negative point takes away a positive point). We keep track all week and then on Friday afternoon if the students DoJo has more negative points than positive points they get to go to Responsibility Club. (Responsibility Club is where kiddos with positive behavior get to go to one classroom where they can choose any activity they want to do (coloring, blocks, games on the SmartBoard, etc). The kiddos who had more negative behaviors have to go to the classroom where they have to make up work they did not finish through out the week or extra worksheets they have already done.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
The site even allows you to change all the setting to what positive/negatives you care about in your<br />
classroom. I did not like "disruptions" so much as I like "talking excessively". <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You can change the icons and make as many of each as you want. <b><u> To top it off,</u></b> the site allows you to email each parent the students behavior as often as you want (I do weekly so every Friday afternoon my parents receive an email). </div>

The people who run the site seem really great too. They have a section entitled "New Features" that allows you to see what they are working on to improve the site and allows you to give your own suggestions. This is my first year using DoJo and already I see my kiddos enjoying it and it making a better impact than my previous green, yellow, red light system. <br />
(Side bar-- My kinder-team and I made a DoJo reward system. When a kiddo reaches so many positives they get a reward (stickers, pencils, big chair, all the way up to eating lunch with the teacher). <br />

They have an alphabet/phonics video, a video for each letter of the alphabet with its name, phonogram sound, and words that begin with it. They also have sight word videos and counting videos. On the side bar they have categorized it into subjects or grade level. My kiddos watch the letter of the day that we learned video and the alphabet video each day during snack. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Barnes & Nobles has a section on their site for Online Stories read by the author. I think they try to put a new one up every month. It's really fun for the kiddos to watch because they see the author <b>and</b> how the author intended for the book to be read. My kiddos wanted to watch <u>The Pigeon Wants a Puppy</u> every day last year they loved it so much!</div>

So these are SOME of my favorite sites. As I find/use more great sites I will blog about them too. I am also going to make a post about some of the things I do on Smart Notebook. (I just realized my home computer does not have the program so none of my files will open up, sad face!!)<br />

SUPER side-bar... I wrote in an earlier post about the alphabet crafts I have my kiddos make each day. My lovely friend put them up to buy in her TeacherPayTeachers site. Go get them!!!<br />

Happy Teaching this week!!<br />
<br />

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-711220587159320125.post-15174387731830093812012-08-26T21:18:00.002-07:002012-08-26T21:18:54.030-07:00On to the Learning Train!!<div style="text-align: center;">
This week the kiddos have been working hard and learning lots!!! I have been teaching phonograms, parts of a book, stamina reading, reading books independently, sight words (we worked on a, I & my), writing nouns and numbers 1-5 in math. Every kiddo in my class is constantly using their brain muscle and becoming stronger learners!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As promised, my number of the day being implemented during calendar time: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht61N0JUdvcoPSwghDkgNtaz1faX9dZquptA5_DobMj2fzMiyR5WNOOSOJpBcMXXK_TBKctSuhrlQceKv-FZ4ugeUVsSW9dRD99uNHFFm-4Cxcse8rkBkMX4EGKR-oPcXSziSJye4TPxw/s1600/IMG_0415.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht61N0JUdvcoPSwghDkgNtaz1faX9dZquptA5_DobMj2fzMiyR5WNOOSOJpBcMXXK_TBKctSuhrlQceKv-FZ4ugeUVsSW9dRD99uNHFFm-4Cxcse8rkBkMX4EGKR-oPcXSziSJye4TPxw/s320/IMG_0415.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I always have the number filled in for the day. We talk about what the number looks like in writing and the word. Then the kiddos show me different ways to make that number on their fingers (using one hand or two). We fill in the ten frame discussing how much of the frame is filled in and how much of it is empty. The students are really successful at determining the numbers that come after the number of the day on the number line but really struggle to determine the ones that come before (we are working on using our number lines at our seats to have extra exposures with this process). For the last part, "picture", the students all think in their head of a shape or shapes that show that number, then tell their neighbor it, and finally a random student is called upon to share and I will draw to show. Very soon, I hope to move into the kiddos using the pen to fill in the parts. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We also started working on finishing simple sentences by adding the noun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMqvKeeMrrgr5onECh17eARkq38ZsOiUqFmxdxV4ftQ2qPV7SKaUyFVbh1e99eGt87-xOku4-8FNmTemNWMJhdtsEMvej9h81SquGCcV7yYf-1nO3chf1JqrCBo4TDdVtGAb3qLTK38p8/s1600/IMG_0404.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMqvKeeMrrgr5onECh17eARkq38ZsOiUqFmxdxV4ftQ2qPV7SKaUyFVbh1e99eGt87-xOku4-8FNmTemNWMJhdtsEMvej9h81SquGCcV7yYf-1nO3chf1JqrCBo4TDdVtGAb3qLTK38p8/s400/IMG_0404.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
We start by reading the sight word (A for this day) and then I read the nouns aloud. Everyone thinks of the noun they would like to write about. Then the kiddos go back to their seats and circle the noun they want to pick. We then come back together and I randomly call on a student to tell me the noun they decided to pick. Then I model writing just the noun in the first space followed by the whole sentence again below. We then discuss in length how when writing our pictures should always match our sentences. Since this one was "mom" I constantly ask, "What should I be drawing?". The students answer. Then I ask, "Are you sure I shouldn't be drawing a space ship?" and I call students to tell me why not. I repeat a couple times and then the students are sent to independently finish their own sentences.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigFfX4YL__pobqNhSZiB4XoRXqQ3E23gmG8S_1fwXlGA111kxSzhCvjLts_oK9GqyF36UNcArhDLgoBH_J35zu0jj_Sab8AloQCQeTm6r128s7IGBTR47bNroL9n57Q6wcSW9jRR2S-_c/s1600/IMG_0405.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigFfX4YL__pobqNhSZiB4XoRXqQ3E23gmG8S_1fwXlGA111kxSzhCvjLts_oK9GqyF36UNcArhDLgoBH_J35zu0jj_Sab8AloQCQeTm6r128s7IGBTR47bNroL9n57Q6wcSW9jRR2S-_c/s200/IMG_0405.JPG" width="150" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLFpJH5HhLFX-_hyphenhyphenANQMWmF76OFgsKxdxF2Wdzk5ncQt88nd-Hkut3kHEOXRWPgY9XozfQ4GwEWJO7FRqUWLPuLZ46NYjdd1BJ4iTzzTOhiFHQ6j7tSV0O9b6cZA0NziVj-K_KahVhRbc/s1600/IMG_0406.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLFpJH5HhLFX-_hyphenhyphenANQMWmF76OFgsKxdxF2Wdzk5ncQt88nd-Hkut3kHEOXRWPgY9XozfQ4GwEWJO7FRqUWLPuLZ46NYjdd1BJ4iTzzTOhiFHQ6j7tSV0O9b6cZA0NziVj-K_KahVhRbc/s200/IMG_0406.JPG" width="150" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil72oGCfN73WHcIhIXFKlzm1u-qpXMPjdqFnLAzH75R4eQghadUUXEWuXS5JPTPwAuG7jFdIwT6GrUmNFea7WymkjRodXf1MpnaT2qoGF3GDWE_XZyvF4m7RK4oRJr6eZmYB514j44L10/s1600/IMG_0407.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEil72oGCfN73WHcIhIXFKlzm1u-qpXMPjdqFnLAzH75R4eQghadUUXEWuXS5JPTPwAuG7jFdIwT6GrUmNFea7WymkjRodXf1MpnaT2qoGF3GDWE_XZyvF4m7RK4oRJr6eZmYB514j44L10/s200/IMG_0407.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can see some writing is a little shakier than others but <b>everyone</b> has been writing a simple sentence and drawing a corresponding picture to the best of their ability!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One last thing: </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just wanted to show my weekly letter I send home. I really like to keep my parents in the loop of what is going on at school each week. I tell them what we are learning, important upcoming events, and any notes they need to remember. Some of my parents do not have email so I send a hard copy home every week on Monday with the kiddos homework packets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisdRqkGcaKEL_NUpvcO_0HiMXosOTGrh4RrTYWP5fCHTuLcv8mb9UT7TVaHTdrKsXfQCWfICkPsYQZwitGaa5rk0SGLdUmR4sjNN25b33oj7o8fZTTq0j78ECo552qJvYnS4CG5nV_M4k/s1600/IMG_0414.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEisdRqkGcaKEL_NUpvcO_0HiMXosOTGrh4RrTYWP5fCHTuLcv8mb9UT7TVaHTdrKsXfQCWfICkPsYQZwitGaa5rk0SGLdUmR4sjNN25b33oj7o8fZTTq0j78ECo552qJvYnS4CG5nV_M4k/s320/IMG_0414.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Parent involvement is key in a students learning so the more informed they are the better!!</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Happy Teaching!!!</div>

The first week of school is over!!! And I still plan on going back tomorrow--yes!!! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Monday started the week off a little rough! In our 3 regular ed Kinder classes we each had around 28 kiddos! Pure craziness!!! There were tears, some from the kiddos and some from us teachers, but we pushed though. It was a lot of management and not so many procedures (though my 28 did somehow walk through the hallways like perfect little champs-- not so much straight but diffidently quiet!). We had a meeting immediately after school and some teachers got switched around so we now have a 4th Kinder teacher- HOORAY!!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFbjAPsRONtiLcZCrZ1DXIExDLWxlhU13XeHMyPyGDAu1feRG4sWKoQcQ0tNV_29dKz5IJ4OSxwOfnfMKQ1JqfdDCI0nkhlsZr088eBu8E47tmk7eI6IbvtmX38gGjcbnESucRRJe5Ryo/s1600/IMG_0394.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFbjAPsRONtiLcZCrZ1DXIExDLWxlhU13XeHMyPyGDAu1feRG4sWKoQcQ0tNV_29dKz5IJ4OSxwOfnfMKQ1JqfdDCI0nkhlsZr088eBu8E47tmk7eI6IbvtmX38gGjcbnESucRRJe5Ryo/s400/IMG_0394.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
(Here is my outside of the classroom bulletin board I forgot to take a picture of for last week.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
So on Tuesday, I got to started over again with 20 Kinders!! We did lots of procedures, procedures, procedures!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I started out reading them the book, <u>Bono Goes to School</u>. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifBDoxuBq26EzoMW1972SSJLNL9aQlTxaK5lbST145QGdRTyG1UTpahTtGj4A7Mym5x41Uzi7S6tAR2Nwr6EsqhQo4myKY5VqqLAht8zqKBZT_A8ev2t4wPiyluwgcUoExttA6T3NuCL4/s1600/IMG_0401.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifBDoxuBq26EzoMW1972SSJLNL9aQlTxaK5lbST145QGdRTyG1UTpahTtGj4A7Mym5x41Uzi7S6tAR2Nwr6EsqhQo4myKY5VqqLAht8zqKBZT_A8ev2t4wPiyluwgcUoExttA6T3NuCL4/s200/IMG_0401.JPG" width="150" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It is about a monkey who goes to school but does not know the rules. He makes lots of mistakes but learns his lesson and starts making good choices. The kids love it because after the first time they can help read it. We then went over our classroom rules and I started using my "whole-brain teaching" management system.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbksL3wviB_eJ_-TIuNMbWVQ9Qy3Ms7-g72s1sHFI-GsFb5RT4DDK3v5v1aNIY33lOcw_1vEqCul7Fey76N2MygGXYeijkHhyu3xp7uyr59GUiwxA0VeYwFI7v8840E1hzo33KxsKXma4/s1600/IMG_0400.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbksL3wviB_eJ_-TIuNMbWVQ9Qy3Ms7-g72s1sHFI-GsFb5RT4DDK3v5v1aNIY33lOcw_1vEqCul7Fey76N2MygGXYeijkHhyu3xp7uyr59GUiwxA0VeYwFI7v8840E1hzo33KxsKXma4/s400/IMG_0400.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
They loved getting "wow's" (they would respond "Ooh Yeah!") and seemed to really respond to changing their behavior when I had to say "Uh-Oh" (they would respond "Ooh No!"). Out of the four days I did this part of my management system they had 3 days of more "Wow's" than "Uh-oh's"! They are all really looking forward to reaching their goal of a Popsicle party. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

We have the WORST glue bottles provided by my school so being super careful is key. The kiddos did a fabulous job each time though. They really enjoyed doing the dot pictures to help them practice "only a dot, not a lot"!</div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I also started teaching sequential processing. (Sequential processing is teaching the kiddos the sounds letters make alone and together.) I started out with "a" and "t". Here is how I set up my board for the process:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyNPYPQeiFYJ5hq0Bi7t7p4EXBb3BA64JgoMiAP3kcXigxbqqRlrVAwjhwNwXELYGrMnv_KDaR4RE9FFTIYrUjn2CSvcCLTuYjPwA-wE2lR2kRqbSsA0FUVBAC9uosE6k-MhKUaI6FyYk/s1600/IMG_0399.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgyNPYPQeiFYJ5hq0Bi7t7p4EXBb3BA64JgoMiAP3kcXigxbqqRlrVAwjhwNwXELYGrMnv_KDaR4RE9FFTIYrUjn2CSvcCLTuYjPwA-wE2lR2kRqbSsA0FUVBAC9uosE6k-MhKUaI6FyYk/s400/IMG_0399.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I use the cards to begin the lesson. I tell them the sound(s) the phonogram makes and they practice saying it. Then I teach about how each phonogram has a capital/lower-case, how words can start with that phonogram, and then we practice on the SmartBoard writing the capital/lower-case of the phonogram before they practice individually. Once that is accomplished the students come back to the carpet and practice writing the phonograms on white boards to review previously taught phonograms and the new one they learned for that day. At the end of the lesson they make a craft to represent the new phonogram and then take it home so they have a tool to practice with.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNvMfpOvIC8qua8vegyHxt5cAyvGTwxz64qYYYcItv_9RasrEQhac4CivM9u82UVmmYKi0aAucKT2lPdHxx0Oi3P6jW42-QPBrXpXTLQ-nOVXXF9WoNdHCWcHTxce73w90IfQyLaNQ7As/s1600/IMG_0402.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNvMfpOvIC8qua8vegyHxt5cAyvGTwxz64qYYYcItv_9RasrEQhac4CivM9u82UVmmYKi0aAucKT2lPdHxx0Oi3P6jW42-QPBrXpXTLQ-nOVXXF9WoNdHCWcHTxce73w90IfQyLaNQ7As/s320/IMG_0402.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I put the one I make above the letter in my alphabet to remind the kiddos letters are also phonograms. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Look for the stencils SOON on <a href="http://idowedoyoudo.blogspot.com/">http://idowedoyoudo.blogspot.com/</a> She will have the whole 26 single phonogram stencils and pictures of what they look like. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here are few other things I made this week but have yet to put into action (<strike>SO MUCH TO DO--NOT ENOUGH TIME!!)</strike>.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Sorry its sideways--but I put the labels on all of my kiddos math journals. I found them FREE!! on this blog <a href="http://www.mrswillskindergarten.com/2011/07/daily-math-journals-freebie.html">http://www.mrswillskindergarten.com/2011/07/daily-math-journals-freebie.html</a>. I love them--Thank You Mrs. Wills!!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I also made my number of the day for my calendar.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5mKVhDX60p5h37DCAageeyAA36v4rMAgJPYgOXYbGt8ILMR7AJC0trlx7x1QA8m-1xpAwuyK0PywuC8Z_SdaW7u25ms0f3ZqdXaKcRWk78AdnAnDu7nfmm59QSeOsxbs-8ifN0kUnrk/s1600/IMG_0393.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEih5mKVhDX60p5h37DCAageeyAA36v4rMAgJPYgOXYbGt8ILMR7AJC0trlx7x1QA8m-1xpAwuyK0PywuC8Z_SdaW7u25ms0f3ZqdXaKcRWk78AdnAnDu7nfmm59QSeOsxbs-8ifN0kUnrk/s400/IMG_0393.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'm starting this tomorrow-starting with number 1. I will put up pictures next week and let you know how it goes!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
All in all, the first week was a success!! My kiddos have a long way to go (some could not find their name on their cubbies let alone copy it onto paper) but I know we will get there step by step. I am always so excited to see them make huge gains in their own personal education!!</div>

Saying good-bye to summer, tomorrow is the first official day of my school year. (YIKES!!)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is some of the things I have been working on in my classroom:</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(You will notice my star theme throughout the room.)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy-4Us0LUUpo-wiQfKSd5DtgTT7oGgeibrpXxBo27JsexufoCzZudDYWOPedVyR3qxktoHS6nSPDj4TOr7tQhusL5W1I0crzPxNNlWpbJe8b5b_y5J8E30AU3iQh0RjnYcdZiQaESJEAo/s1600/IMG_0343.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgy-4Us0LUUpo-wiQfKSd5DtgTT7oGgeibrpXxBo27JsexufoCzZudDYWOPedVyR3qxktoHS6nSPDj4TOr7tQhusL5W1I0crzPxNNlWpbJe8b5b_y5J8E30AU3iQh0RjnYcdZiQaESJEAo/s200/IMG_0343.JPG" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaSYsJX73k1OiU1DsNoX2UAsUfk6TQ2gMoHAR2p3vhVaxrr0WYGP1AyDKEJuBEUW2qXAMpXBsNxRPY8xsajvQhjjwGFjnqO3PcT8BHOplmSiFw8cpq5WceXPpVJdIMEw_wNXDDH6JeIYw/s1600/IMG_0344.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaSYsJX73k1OiU1DsNoX2UAsUfk6TQ2gMoHAR2p3vhVaxrr0WYGP1AyDKEJuBEUW2qXAMpXBsNxRPY8xsajvQhjjwGFjnqO3PcT8BHOplmSiFw8cpq5WceXPpVJdIMEw_wNXDDH6JeIYw/s200/IMG_0344.JPG" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
I took down most of my bulletin boards last year and redid them. This one I use for all my calendar items so I like it extra large. However, I do NOT like the line between the two pieces of butcher paper so I decided to try something new. I saw on Pintrest (<a href="http://anotherdayinfirstgrade.blogspot.com/2012/06/how-i-decorated-my-classroom-for-under.html">http://anotherdayinfirstgrade.blogspot.com/2012/06/how-i-decorated-my-classroom-for-under.html</a>) how another teacher put scrunched up paper around there bulletin boards and I thought why not try to cover up the line in the same way. All you do is cut strips, ball them up and them un-ball them into the shape you want to staple them to the wall. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL5_HbrO-yE789G7cpBBFmibLed6jlhZq0VSQEzw3e3hMRA7ive9aVfG1Y3vU4PoyIC_eNumjJOitbKDoO0qSTJOGarszeNmpfvZ5bNGT7dMQf6EtoQGgBc03E8hmji07szrCRynuMVK8/s1600/IMG_0382.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiL5_HbrO-yE789G7cpBBFmibLed6jlhZq0VSQEzw3e3hMRA7ive9aVfG1Y3vU4PoyIC_eNumjJOitbKDoO0qSTJOGarszeNmpfvZ5bNGT7dMQf6EtoQGgBc03E8hmji07szrCRynuMVK8/s400/IMG_0382.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I LOVE how it turned out! I put all the the material I never move at the top of the bulletin board (colors & months of the year) and then all the materials I have the students manipulate during calendar at the bottom. I still need to add my "number of the day" section to the very left (I just got done cutting out all the rest of my lamination today so it will be ready to put up in the morning). </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next I re-did my student work wall. I used clothes-pins with tacks on the back to hang my students work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9y0WlCdatSaWZlhJ35r8ztci9LPmU8i9IS29ix6jVEeKcGRopKH2xikMhxiEEadL48hQOrA8kitRkT_U77Xfl0tniJph7uS8w2hYfDWiy9YzHVLnKtm2_LR1OhF2xhHZK5j46OBTnH64/s1600/IMG_0380.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh9y0WlCdatSaWZlhJ35r8ztci9LPmU8i9IS29ix6jVEeKcGRopKH2xikMhxiEEadL48hQOrA8kitRkT_U77Xfl0tniJph7uS8w2hYfDWiy9YzHVLnKtm2_LR1OhF2xhHZK5j46OBTnH64/s400/IMG_0380.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
Also I painted the back of a bookshelf and added hooks. The bags you see are what I use to put some of my center games in. This way the students just have to grab the bag with the activity in it they are suppose to do and go to their designated spot. I am going to use the side of the filing cabinet as a magnet board (more pictures to come on that center). <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY9XZCrOdsu2BLtBy0jxvIqOpvn-DuAMx3zRaLPQTf8V6ttG7lngdSC_aisz4tsGz2f43B3LoGkQ75uKaW-q56PL9khgoYQlLb44XKO_pdDtR8BDLY6IidemNUQJ2t2sguu4F-taKn-sU/s1600/IMG_0345.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiY9XZCrOdsu2BLtBy0jxvIqOpvn-DuAMx3zRaLPQTf8V6ttG7lngdSC_aisz4tsGz2f43B3LoGkQ75uKaW-q56PL9khgoYQlLb44XKO_pdDtR8BDLY6IidemNUQJ2t2sguu4F-taKn-sU/s320/IMG_0345.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
I also have these lovely new sharpened/unsharpened pencil labels. Thanks again my Pintrest-teachers. I found these at <a href="http://peacelovelearning.blogspot.com/2011/08/getting-crafty.html">http://peacelovelearning.blogspot.com/2011/08/getting-crafty.html</a>. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is my reading area--minus a rug. I still have not found one I love to replace my old one that my husband said was too germy after 3 years to salvage. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkzJT9665GZZl7bImMOpRcrVKRVTLTdBhX3OCyMrIyULVN1nlE0RJUuJJN4udGz3sjrgo1bJNMUNmBJCAF8uT1Xqva43h-PR1djHcUjDUzXWOrOvgMfz5WNHatDO44zduTJo1SWKevTKs/s1600/IMG_0383.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgkzJT9665GZZl7bImMOpRcrVKRVTLTdBhX3OCyMrIyULVN1nlE0RJUuJJN4udGz3sjrgo1bJNMUNmBJCAF8uT1Xqva43h-PR1djHcUjDUzXWOrOvgMfz5WNHatDO44zduTJo1SWKevTKs/s400/IMG_0383.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the far left is the rest of my calendar corner (I have the kiddos put the number of the month up each day and the day it was yesterday, today, and will be tomorrow). The big blue bulletin board is my word-wall with a table underneath for my sight-word center. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY6-nEV_pG5T3znGX9OedOdUCCw7rWIgzP42AcXQh8N8cD5SijMp7EaHOtuuBvcxDo_cdGIHJsos2WstQLYvzeAfa_XdNZOJ1_fQhYQb-RBzK58NtNWqERECOmI9nUJq120MjX37H-Aho/s1600/IMG_0384.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="300" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjY6-nEV_pG5T3znGX9OedOdUCCw7rWIgzP42AcXQh8N8cD5SijMp7EaHOtuuBvcxDo_cdGIHJsos2WstQLYvzeAfa_XdNZOJ1_fQhYQb-RBzK58NtNWqERECOmI9nUJq120MjX37H-Aho/s400/IMG_0384.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the far left is where my kiddos hang there backpacks and all their cubbies are located. I use my "super star" wall for stickers the kiddos can collect for positive behavior, turning in homework and/or other important papers they take home to get signed. Every 5 stickers they earn the kiddos get to pick a treat from the treasure box.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
Here is the sign I am going to use for my Whole-Brain Teaching "score-board". When I see that they are all on tasks and following the rules I am going to say "Wow" and they are going to respond "Ooh Yeah!" and when they are not I will say "Uh-Oh" and they will respond "Ooh No!". Every day they get more "wow's" then "uh-oh's" they will get the next letter in the saying they are trying to earn (I think the first one I am going to have them try for is "Wow, popsicles here we come" to earn a popsicle party). If you have not heard about Whole-Brain teaching google it or youtube it immediately. I am excited to start this new teaching tool! </div>

This is the wall I am going to use for Anchor Charts. I am a huge believer in anchor charts and will blog more about them as they start to go up. At the table below I have my listening center and my computer center. </div>

The parents signed in and told me how their kiddo was getting home on the first day of school and then they got to do a "treasure hunt" with their little one to find different places in the classroom. </div>

My fellow teacher Kristen (<a href="http://idowedoyoudo.blogspot.com/">http://idowedoyoudo.blogspot.com/</a>) got this lovely gem from <a href="http://littlekinderwarriors.blogspot.com/">http://littlekinderwarriors.blogspot.com/</a>. The kiddos LOVED it and it made the night more fun and smooth for everyone!!</div>

One thing I worked on with my lovely mother (I am once again so thankful for her and her crafty ability) is making new chair covers for my classroom. My first year of teaching I got hired late and came into a classroom with very little furniture. One of the key missing items was cubbies (yikes!!). Luckily one of my dear friends saved me and bought me chair covers as a "welcome to teaching gift". After 3 years of having them they were pretty nasty and most had started ripping. I asked my Mom if she would help me make new ones and she agreed!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
(Note: I have never sewn in my life while my Mom is an avid seamstress who regularly makes quilts to raise money for children in Africa! I'm not going to lie, it was 80% my Mom's doing and 20% me on a learning curve!! If you do not know how to sew or do not have a amazing seamstress Mother/friend like mine I would warn against trying to take on this project yourself!!)</div>

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We measured one of my old chair covers and found we needed 14'x54.5' of fabric for each chair cover (my classroom has little baby Kinder chairs so make sure to measure your own first). We went to JoAnn's for the fabric and the plastic to house their name-tags (we used a 50% off coupon plus they have 15% off your total purchase for teachers (bring your ID) which came out to be around $85 for all the fabric, plastic and thread that we needed). </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
As you can also see from the diagram my Mom drew you have to cut the fabric then fold it back and forth to make the pocket to go over the chair and the other pocket to hold their belongings. I would love to tell you all the details of how to do it exactly but I know I will skip a step! So, if you would like to know all the details for this project just email me any questions and I will have my Mom help me explain them to you :)</div>

I have been "blog researching" to get new ideas and see what others are doing in their classrooms for a while now. Since it is rude to be a taker and not a giver, it is now time for me to contribute to this awesome online space! I am new to all of this--so please be forgiving in my learning curve :)<br />
<br />
My goal is to blog during the school year at least 1 time a week to show what my kiddos are learning and the tools we are using for their success! My goal for July is to start getting ready for the next school year and let everyone into my plans and actions of what I am doing! My husband and I are going to Cali this week (we have to get out of this horrible Phoenix heat) but once I get back I am going to head into my classroom a couple times a week and start getting ready!!<br />
<br />
I hope you all subscribe to my blog so we can all connect and allow our Kinders (or kiddos) to get the best education possible!!<br />
<br />
Thanks for stopping by!!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2
